Batwing Babies

There's no hiding from it, bat-wing or trapeze style bags have exploded on the scene and I'm sure you've spotted them everywhere. When it first became popular I thought this bag silhouette was quite refreshing, seeing it a lot in the streets on designer and non-designer bags alike. We all know that the perpetrator of this trend is Parisian fashion house Céline with its creative director Phoebe Philo who definitely gave the brand a stronger identity. Here are some designs from Céline's retailgasmic winter 2013 collection.

The mother of all batwing bags, the luggage phantom tote

The beautiful Trapeze

The already classic Luggage

Now in woven and a new multicolor designs

And new in the mix is the Tie. I'm not really a big fan of this one.

The trend seems to be hanging around and a lot of designers have included the batwing/trapeze style in their collections. Let's check out some designer and diffusion line offerings. First, some diffusion line options that are not too ostentatious and all under 500 euros.

Moving on to the big boys, here are some designer picks.

I really like this stylish yet discreet 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli trapeze tote with its detachable shoulder strap and the zipper details. The designer seems to have abandoned this trapeze style though in his fall 2013 collection and has stuck to boxier, vintage-inspired designs.

Valentino has a Rockstud leather trapeze bag that's not for the faint of heart, or would you rather get the famous Rockstud leather pumps? I think I'd definitely rather have those studs on my feet with those killer pumps, sorry trapeze bag!

Alexander Wang just had to have one batwing style in his collection as well, obviously THE A.Wang bag is definitely the Rocco, although this hard shell horn back Pelican satchel is a classy one for sure.

Marc Jacobs also has a token trapeze style. The Amelie shoulder bag has a cool leather texture contrast happening and zip-up sides.

Jumping on the batwing bandwagon, Balenciaga also has a couple of options. These bags are also made with zippers, I guess so that you can simply zip up the sides and convert the bags into classic box-shaped totes when you get tired of the style, or when this trend actually fades away. Do you think this style isn't going to be around for long, or is it here to stay? I'm curious to see what the next big bag trend will be
